Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation therapy, uses low-level red (660nm) and near-infrared light (850nm) to stimulate the cell's mitochondria which aids the body's natural healing processes. It has been found to be beneficial for addressing inflammation and pain management.
The two main wavelengths we use in red light therapy are 660 nm and 850 nm.
The 660 nm wavelength is considered a "superficial" wavelength, as it penetrates only about 2-3 millimeters into the skin. This makes it ideal for targeting surface-level skin concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, tightening, and hyperpigmentation.
On the other hand, the 850 nm wavelength is considered a "deep" wavelength, as it can penetrate up to 10 millimeters into the skin. This makes it more effective for addressing deeper-seated issues, such as muscle pain, joint pain, and inflammation.
Both wavelengths have their own unique benefits and can be used alone or in combination, depending on the specific treatment. In terms of fat loss, red light therapy has been shown to increase the number of mitochondria in fat cells, which can improve their ability to deal with inflammation. This reduction in inflammation allows the body's natural processes to burn fat more efficiently.
Red light therapy has also been found to be effective in managing pain. The therapy works by stimulating the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the primary energy source for cells in the body. When cells have more energy, they can function better and can help to reduce inflammation and pain.
It is important to note that while red light therapy can be beneficial, it should not be used as a substitute for traditional medical treatment. It should be used in combination with other treatments such as exercise, localized cryo-therapy and healthy eating habits, as well as consulting with a qualified healthcare professional
